Not the least bit impressed with these homemade death traps. I’ve cut and split firewood for over 50 years and know the dangers, mis haps and accidents that are there and can/will happen.

Most of those contraptions can and will maim and kill you, just a matter of time before they get careless or distracted.

Everybody splitting wood to smithereens making it burn faster and more heat go out the chimney, meanwhile i use biggest wood i can find, up to foot in diameter that can fit in my furnace.

Well the auger spiral bit on the actual auger isn’t really home-made. That’s it’s intended function and implementation best I can tell.
Also: this is the only video I have watched that has been consistently pure pucker-factor.

There is nothing in this video that does not make me massively uncomfortable, only exceptions being the fully automated machines.

Some of them aren’t too terrible – if there is a guard between you and the working edge, and it requires you to engage both hands away from the cutting edge and the wood before it splits, it’s actually pretty safe.the gas powered handheld spike screw thing has to be the most inefficient way to split wood ever concocted not to mention noisy, smelly, and a handful to operate, probably hard on the back as well.

Rarely have to split anything, like 2 halfs of the thickest logs that can fit in, with 1,5foot length will burn for 4-6 hours.

And i can start a fire with those big logs, just a bit of diesel and charcoal from previous run and in half a hour its clean fire without needing much attention or setting.
